Jack Carman, ASLA, president of Design for Generations LLC, a design firm specializing in the development of Therapeutic Gardens in senior communities and healthcare facilities. Jack Carman actively works to promote the creation of Therapeutic Gardens by organizing seminars, audio-conferences and contributing to the publication of technical papers. Published works include “Alzheimer’s Garden Project”, Chapter 11, Interaction by Design, 2002. As a contributing writer for national eldercare magazines, such as Assisted Living Success and Nursing Home Magazine, Jack has written numerous articles on the importance of developing Therapeutic Gardens in senior communities. He has lectured at national conferences on the “Benefits of Nature and the Older Adult”. Jack Carman is a Landscape Architect with over 15 years of experience in the analysis, planning, design and management of outdoor spaces. As a design consultant, Jack has specialized in creating therapeutic exterior environments for senior communities and healthcare facilities. His design experience includes the creation of over 50 Landscape Plans for Assisted Living and Alzheimer Residences, Adult Day Health Care Centers, Long Term Care Facilities, Continuing Care Retirement Communities and Community Hospitals. The goal of Jack Carman’s designs for gardens and natural areas is to meet the physical, social and psychological needs of older adults using the gardens. As a Landscape Architect, he is able to analyze site conditions and create design solutions in order to promote improved quality of life. It has been Jack’s philosophy to blend the built environment with the more natural aspects of design, taking advantage of nature’s beauty and restorative powers. He holds a Bachelor of Science in Landscape Architecture from Rutgers University and a Bachelor of Arts in Early Childhood Education from the University of Richmond. Jack Carman is founder and Co-Chair of the American Society of Landscape Architects Committee on Therapeutic Garden Design. He is currently the Trustee for the New Jersey Chapter of the American Society of Landscape Architects and a member of the ASLA Continuing Education Committee. Jack’s past duties have included Chairman of the 1998 Chapter Presidents Council, President of the New Jersey ASLA Chapter and Co-Chair of the Chapter Initiatives Program.
