Gloria M. Gutman, Ph.D.
Dr. Gutman has a B.A. and Ph.D. from the University of British Columbia and an M.A. from the University of Alberta. She is well known in the field of gerontology as an educator, author, and consultant. Dr. Gutman developed the Gerontology Research Centre at Simon Fraser University and has been its director since its establishment in 1982. She also developed the Gerontology Program at Simon Fraser University. Established in 1983, this program is one of only three in Canada that offers a Masters Degree in Gerontology. It is unique nationally and internationally in offering specialization in aging and the built environment and in population aging/health promotion and aging.
Dr. Gutman holds the rank of Professor in the Faculty of Arts at Simon Fraser University. Prior to taking up her current position, she was a member of the Psychology Departments at the University of Calgary and the University of British Columbia. From 1986-1998 she was also an Associate Member of the Department of Health Care and Epidemiology at the University of British Columbia.
She is the author/editor of eighteen books and over a hundred scholarly articles, reports, and papers. She has been a consultant to the Ministry of Lands, Parks and Housing in B.C., the Continuing Care Division of the B.C. Ministry of Health and to Health Canada. She has served on a number of federal-provincial task forces, including one which established guidelines for comprehensive services for the psychiatrically impaired elderly, and one which developed design guidelines for housing and care facilities for the elderly.
Dr. Gutman’s research interests are wide-ranging; they include seniors’ housing, long term care, health promotion, dementia care and environmental design. Recent research projects include “Behavioral Outcomes of Environmental Design Interventions in a SCU“ and “Housing Options for Older Canadians: Case Studies and User Satisfaction.” She is also developing research that will be conducted in the Dr. Tong Louie Living Laboratory, a full-scale mock residence established to study effective design of environments and products for older persons and adults with disabilities. The “Living Laboratory” , which Dr. Gutman was instrumental in developing, is a joint endeavour of the SFU Gerontology Research Centre and the BC Institute of Technology, .
Dr. Gutman has also been very active in scholarly and community organizations, provincially, nationally, internationally. She was the Founding President of the Gerontology Association of British Columbia, served two terms as President of the Canadian Association on Gerontology (1987-1991), in 1997 became President-Elect and in 2001 President, of the 60-member country International Association of Gerontology – a position she will hold until 2005. She is a Fellow of the Gerontological Society of America, a member of Canada’s National Statistics Council which advises the Chief Statistician, a member of the Board of Directors of the Canadian Centre for Activity and Aging, and a member of the World Health Organization’s Expert Advisory Panel on Ageing and Health. At the local level, she has served on the Health Services Subcommittee of the B.C. Health Research Foundation, the Advisory Committee for the L'Chaim Adult Day Care Centre, the Board of Directors of the Louis Briar Home and Hospital for the Aged, the Vancouver-Richmond Health Board’s Research and Evaluation Advisory Committee and from 1994-96 was Chair of the Board of Directors of the BC Institute Against Family Violence.
In 2001, Dr. Gutman was named “one of 130 who make a difference” by the Vancouver Sun newspaper and was the recipient of the Canadian Association on Gerontology’s Distinguished Member Award. For a number of years she has been listed in Canadian Who's Who, Who's Who of Canadian Women, and the World Who’s Who of Women..
