Carol Segrave, 58 years old, Founder and President of Connected Lifestyles, is one of America’s most passionate pioneers in the area of Conscious Aging. Born and raised in New Jersey, Segrave earned her bachelor’s degree in English at a nearby women’s college. Her professional career began as an English teacher both in the United States and later abroad at International High Schools in Thailand, Taiwan, and Hong Kong. After much time spent in the classroom teaching, Segrave felt compelled to switch sides in education becoming a student once again, and earning herself a Masters Degree from Rutgers University in Education with a certificate in Educational Gerontology - The Study of the Aging. Segrave, typical of many Gerontologists, always had easy and meaningful relationships with older adults as a young child. She recalls that her grandparents, older neighbors, family and friends were amongst her most treasured relationships. So it was natural that she would pursue even deeper her ongoing interest in Gerontology. With that in mind, Segrave felt it was essential to get on-site training and soon found herself “in the trenches” working as an Activities Director in a nursing home. It is here where Segrave’s life’s mission changed forever. She saw, through first-hand experience, that the backside of age 50 could be a depressing, unforgiving, abusive and deadly experience. The reoccurring reality became an intolerable fact – past vibrant lives were presently stagnant entities counting the days to death. This was unacceptable for Segrave. With more than 25 years of intensive study, experience and dedication Segrave has become the advocate, expert and role model she is today on Conscious Aging. With both her interactive life experience and through her company Connected Lifestyles, she defines Conscious Aging as “the commitment to age authentically and to experience fearlessly life in mid and late adulthood. Moreover, the process begins with acknowledgement of one’s own mortality, and continues with a dedication to working towards an ultimate and personalized wholeness.” Through Segrave’s workshops, keynote presentations and personal one-on-one coaching sessions, she challenges her audiences to take a hard look at how and why our society promotes “unconscious” aging. Specifically, she invites and challenges her audience to evaluate if they are aging unconsciously, and how to reverse that behavior. She gives the 50-plus crowd Conscious Aging “tools” teaching them to develop, understand, manage and embrace the mysteries and vulnerabilities needed to reverse and enjoy their own aging process. Segrave is the author of Retirement Life Designs, Taking Charge of Your Retirement and Management and the Older Workforce Policies and Programs, published by the American Management Association. She is also a contributor to the forthcoming book Spiritual Pathways in Mid and Late Life. Segrave is, as well, a member of the National Gerontology Academic Society (Sigma Phi Omega) and Kappa Delta Pi (an honor society in education), and the American Society of Aging. She is a two time Senior Olympics Silver Medallist in the 50 yd. Freestyle, years 1999 and 2000. She will be competing in November in the Tri-Umph Classic a mini-triathlon sponsored by AARP. Segrave is the proud mother of two children and a grandmother of one. Her daughter resides in Los Angles, CA, and her son, daughter-in-law, and grandson currently reside in Lake Tahoe, NV.
